About

Carman, ca. 1900 (Archives of Manitoba)

Heritage Manitoba is the work of David Butterfield, for more than 20 years the Architectural Historian for the Province of Manitoba. The major activity during his years at the Historic Resources Branch focused on the architectural heritage of small-town Manitoba – he has been down nearly every road in southern Manitoba, and has done extensive work in nearly every small community. He has detailed knowledge and a strong bond with these places, and has worked with scores of local groups over the years on a wide range of important heritage initiatives.

In 2010 David created the Heritage Manitoba website, with the assistance of 12 impressively active local heritage groups. The site has evolved over the years, with this current version focusing on key research projects that David has undertaken since his retirement in 2015.

Besides the work featured here, David has continued to consult with small-town heritage groups to produce a multitude of other materials – heritage management plans, walking tours, tourism and educational materials. Many of these are available on local websites.

David’s dedication to the distinct and fascinating character of small-town Manitoba will be apparent through the wealth of materials on the following pages. We hope you enjoy the journey.
